The Story Behind the Art

Fresh off launching Degens, the goal was to keep the creative momentum going and share an exclusive release with early holders. The artwork originally started when Jazz was designing a set of Pepe characters for a separate client. When that client abruptly decided to move in a different direction, the traits were stepped in and acquired so Jazz’s hard work wouldn’t go to waste. Instead of creating a large generative drop, those traits were reimagined into an intimate, 25 piece collection of completely custom one-of-one designs.

This collection also marked a hands on milestone: learning how to manually manage and inscribe digital artifacts using Sparrow Wallet. After acquiring vintage Block 78 Silk Road sats, they were carefully split into custom groups of 1,000 sats. Because existing tools at the time didn’t support creating inscriptions wrapped entirely in rare coins, each transaction had to be configured by hand, paving the way for a brand new concept on the network.

What Makes It Special

  • All Rare Postage: Moving an artwork on Bitcoin requires extra satoshis to act as postage, which almost all projects fill with everyday common coins. Pepes was the first collection to completely replace that common filler with uninscribed rare coins, meaning holding one Pepe gives you the artwork and 1,000 rare sats at the exact same time.
  • Historic Silk Road Sats: Block 78 contains 5 billion total satoshis, but only about 2% (100 million) were ever tied to Silk Road, the historic first marketplace to adopt Bitcoin. Every single satoshi in this collection comes directly from that scarce, historic group.
  • Hand Crafted Execution: Every single piece was prepared, positioned, and inscribed individually by hand rather than run through automated launch tools, making it a true labor of love.
