The Story Behind the Art

Degens was where everything started for Occulum. In the summer of 2023, digital art on Bitcoin was taking off, but most people were strictly focused on how early an image was created. Around that time, an exciting new concept was emerging: collecting rare, historic pieces of Bitcoin called satoshis, or sats for short. Back then, information about these rare coins was kept behind closed doors, allowing middlemen to mark them up and make them needlessly expensive.

The goal was to break through that barrier: learn how satoshis worked, share the education openly with the community, and create a collection that gave people access to rare digital history at a fair and accessible value. Partnering with the artist Jazz, 200 pixel art monkeys were designed from scratch, each with over 50 unique traits and 20 completely custom one-of-one designs.

What Makes It Special

  • Historic Bitcoin Sats: Each piece is permanently tied to genuine, historic satoshis rather than everyday common coins. The collection includes 8 different varieties, such as early 2009 sats mined alongside Satoshi Nakamoto, as well as sats famously used to buy the two Papa John’s pizzas in Bitcoin’s first real world transaction.
  • Second Ever Pizza Palindrome: The collection features the second artwork ever inscribed on a pizza palindrome sat (a number that reads the same backward and forward), made just days after the first one appeared on Bitcoin.
  • Fair Entry Value: While rare sat projects often launched with high barriers to entry, Degens was offered at a modest price to let collectors join early Bitcoin history without overpaying.
