The Story Behind the Art

Solami Degens was inscribed within the sub 1k range, making the collection part of the first 1,000 on-chain inscriptions ever created on Solana. Developed directly after Satoshi Degens and Pepes on Bitcoin, the project took the familiar base characters from those collections and brought them over to Solana to craft a brand new series of one-of-one pieces. This marked an exciting step beyond Bitcoin, establishing an early presence on the network. While heavily active in the Ordinals ecosystem, tracking Solana closely showed that on-chain inscriptions were not merely riding Bitcoin hype. Solana actually had on-chain art launching just twelve days after Bitcoin Ordinals, starting with Blockrons on December 26, 2022, compared to the first Ordinal on December 14, 2022.

Recognizing how early this infrastructure was, the decision was made to secure early inscription numbers right away, creating 50 Degens along with 10 Pepes. Because Solana inscriptions start mutable before being permanently locked, the early slots were claimed first, giving Jazz the time needed to hand craft each distinct one-of-one piece from scratch using the established characters.

A creative reveal mechanic was used to take advantage of Solana’s dual metadata setup. The off-chain preview displayed a base model of the characters, while the true art was being finished. Weeks later, once Jazz completed the individual pieces, the on-chain images were updated directly to the new 1/1s and permanently locked as immutable, making it impossible to ever alter the art again. This forced collectors to look directly at the on-chain data to see their revealed pieces. The entire collection was distributed completely free to Bitcoin holders who owned at least two Satoshi Degens, eventually reaching peak secondary sales of 15 SOL.
